Description

BEDFIELD LONG GREEN TM 26 NW 2/25 Mill Farm Cottage - II Former farmhouse. Mid C14. Timber framed and plastered, half-hipped thatched roof. A former open hall house of 2-cell form, a probable 3rd cell beyond the upper end of the hall now missing. 1 1/2 storeys. 3 windows, C19 casements. C19 plank door. Internal stack with red brick shaft. Pantiled lean-to additions on each gable end. Interior. Exposed framing; part of one diamond- mullioned hall window and evidence for windows at service end. Heavy C14 joists at service end have original trimming for a stair. Hall open truss has an arched-braced tie beam, the centre portion removed. This supports octagonal queen-posts which have a splayed base with one roll moulding, the capitals lost; thick solid braces from the queen-posts to arcade plates and collar. A further truss above collar level may exist but this area was ceiled over at time of survey. Both wallplates and arcade plates have stop-splayed scarf joints with face pegs. Inserted floor of c.1600 has plain joists, set flat. Stack inserted in upper end of hall, against the open truss. This is the oldest house in the parish. Listing NGR: TM2206066462
