Description
HAUGHLEY HAUGHLEY GREEN
TM 06 SW
4/87 Walnut Tree Manor
9/12/55
-- II
Former farmhouse. Late C17 with earlier core, probably of c.1600. Remodelling
of mid C19 and mid C20. Red brick, partly encasing timber-framed core (the
rear wall remains partially timber-framed with some C18 plasterwork). To
right is a section of good late C17 brickwork with burnt headers, a band at
1st floor and a parapet gable now plastered, incoporating a C17 internal end
chimney with a moulded cap. To left is further red brickwork (without burnt
headers) of late C17 or C18; the parapet gable and chimney were rebuilt in
C19, perhaps involving truncation. The centre section is a mid C19
remodelling with areas of red and gault brick at random, originally
colourwashed. Plaintiled roof with an axial C19 chimney of red brick. 4
hipped plaintiled dormers with C20 large small-pane casements. 2 storeys and
attics, 5 windows, including prominent central C19 2-storey entrance porch
with parapet gable. Mid C20 small-pane metal casements, in C19 openings with
flat arches of red brick. C17/C18 window openings with segmental heads are
visible, blocked with C19 red brickwork. Mid C20 pair of glazed entrance
doors with sidelights. Some C18 panelling and one chamber fireplace. C17
framing members are exposed; at the centre is evidence of good close-studding
and a lower roofline of c.1600. For a time the home of Capt. Oates of the
Scott Antarctic Expedition.
