Listed Building: ROOKERY FARMHOUSE (433498)

NETTLESTEAD TM 04 NE 6/131 Rookery Farmhouse - II Farmhouse, early C16, with mid C14 core. A rare, but very depleted example of an aisled hall house. Various alterations of early C17 and later. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof with C17 axial chimney of red brick. The C17 parlour block has mid C19 small-pane sash windows with side- lights; other windows are C19 and C20 casements. A pair of panelled and glazed C19 entrance doors. The aisled house is of 3 bays, but the aisles have been removed from both sides. 4 trusses have evidence for passing-braces which were tenoned into the main tie-beam, passed the principal posts in trenches and continued downwards into the aisles. Square-sectioned braces beneath the tie-beams survive in a few instances. Parts of the arcade-places remain, with some square sectioned bracing down to the arcade-posts. The arcade posts in the open truss of the hall were replaced in C16, when the aisles were removed and a massive 1st floor inserted. The evidence for diamond-mullioned and shuttered windows is mainly of this date also. In early C17 the C14/C16 coupled rafter roof was almost removed and a queen-post roof built, and a parlour block and chimney were added at the south end. A small wing on the west side is perhaps of C16/C17 with C20 alterations. The house was restored in 1984. Listing NGR: TM0811249714
