Description

MELLIS THE COMMON (NORTH WEST TM 07 SE SIDE) 3/26 Ash Tree Farm House 29.7.55 GV II Farmhouse, latterly 2 dwellings. Early C17, altered and part reroofed C20. Timber frames, plastered. Steeply pitched machine tiled and plaintiled roofs. 3 cell main range, originally with a unit house/dairy wing of 3 cells with a cross passage plan. All 2 storeys. C20 openings. Main range entrance now to right between hall and service bays, architraved panelled door, open gabled porch, 3 light casements. Ridge stack between hall and parlour, rebuilt cap. Right end added external stack. Unit house/dairy wing range to rear right has slightly lower eaves and ridge. Blocked cross passage entrance towards front. Ridge stack towards rear. Rear gable end exposed plates and purlins. Interior: hall has stop chamfered cross axial binding beam and joists, parlour has stop chamfered axial binding beam and joists, in both rooms close studding, chamfered mid rails and 4-light cavetto mullioned window openings, depressed brick arched fireplace in parlour. First floor: arched braces in walling, 3 and 5-light diamond mullioned window openings, over parlour cranked braces in walling and a chamfered 4 centred brick arched fireplace, reroofed in C20. Rear wing has close studding, cross passage doorways, a stop chamfered cross axial binding beam, cambered tie beams to side purlin roof with arched windbraces. Partly moated site.
