Description

GISLINGHAM MILL STREET (NORTH SIDE) TM 0771 6/50 Oak House - II House. Mid C17, altered late C19. Timber frame, plastered and roughcast. Steeply pitched plaintiled roofs with slate on service range. 3 cell main range with cross gabled parlour extending to rear to form an L on plan; originally detached 3 bay service range now linked at right angles to front left. 2 storeys and attics. Parlour to right projects very slightly to front, facade divided by C19 plaster panels and storey band, original entrance blocked. 3-light leaded casements, transomed to ground floor right, all with simple plaster architraves. Offset brick plinth. Boxed eaves. Parlour has C19 consoles to wall plates, 2 lights in attic, over hall a 3-light gabled dormer. Axial ridge stack between hall and parlour has cornice to foot, 3 diagonally set shafts with an extra shaft added to left in C19. Left gable end; exposed side purlins. Right return has leaded casements in rear bay, moulded cornice band, an inserted stack in rear bay. To rear similar casements, some lattice lights to parlour, behind main stack is a C19 lean-to entrance porch with steps up to a recessed part glazed and part raised fielded 6 panelled door, raised panelled reveals, doorcase with fluted pilasters and lintel with roundels at angles, projecting mutule blocked hood. An inserted stack to rear of service bay in main range. A boarded link from main range with coving to upper storey to 2 storey C17 service range to left, largely rebuilt and reroofed in C19. Inner elevation has an architraved boarded door towards main range, 3-light glazing bar casements, boxed eaves, a C19 internal stack at front end with red and white brick shafts, shallow pitch to roof. To rear a slate roofed lean-to outshut, above a blocked hatch opening. Interior: frame largely concealed, hall has crossed chamfered binding beams, parlour 'wing' was originally 2 rooms with stop chamfered binding beams. Upper storeys not inspected. Service range has some early framing, jowled posts, stop chamfered cross axial binding beams. Listing NGR: TM0725571858
