Listed Building: ROSE FARMHOUSE (280983)

HORHAM ATHELINGTON ROAD TM 27 SW 5/42 Rose Farmhouse II Farmhouse. First half of C15 with C16 alterations. Timber framed, mostly roughcast-rendered; colourwashed brick to left gable end below tie beam level. Pantiled roof. 2 storeys. 3-cell form with former open hall. Scattered fenestration, C20 small-paned metal casements. Boarded and 4-panelled doors, one with gabled open porch. Heavy internal stack, the external portion of the shaft rebuilt in mid C20; external stack to right gable end. Internally most of the frame is concealed. Hall open truss has cambered tie beam with long arched braces meeting at the centre. Fine octagonal crown-post with moulded base and cap, and with 4-way bracing. The remainder of the hall roof is substantially intact, all the timbers well sooted, as are both plastered end gables. Moulded and embattled dais beam visible on ground floor. Evidence for both cross-entry doorways. In C16 the hall was floored over and a stack built against the outside of the upper end wall. The one bay of the inserted floor visible has closely-spaced joists with run-out stops. Beyond the stack is a one-bay parlour with plain C16 joists. The service end seems to have been altered and perhaps enlarged in C15 - early C16: in the front wall is a jowled post about one metre from the gable end. The roof above is altered, although some medieval rafters remain; in the front slope is a low purlin set square, extending the full length of the cell and protruding into the hall where it is heavily sooted.
