Listed Building: WASH FARMHOUSE (281095)

REDLINGFIELD TM 17 SE 4/154 Wash Farmhouse 29.7.55 GV II Farmhouse. C15; partly rebuilt and enlarged in C16 and early C17. Timber framed and plastered. Thatched roof, half-hipped to the right (over the lower end), 1 1/2 storeys, with an attic over the upper end. A former open hall house of 3 cells, the solar end rebuilt and extended by one bay in C16. Mid C20 casement windows. One C16 first floor window with diamond mullions. Set forward is a gabled addition of early C17 with later lean-to's to each side. In the gable end of this addition is a mid C20 battened plank door. Internal stack. Intact medieval roof. The hall open truss has a cambered tie beam with long curved braces; the tie beam carries a tall square crown-post with simply-moulded capital and base, and with solid 2-bay bracing to the collar purlin. The-plastered lower gable of the hall also survives and is heavily sooted. The ceiling of boards and clay lump over the service chamber seems to be a medieval alteration to prevent smoke reaching this room. Evidence for one hall window and both windows over the service end, one of which is largely intact. Part of the moulded and embattled dais beam is visible, the remainder. obscured by the stack which was inserted against it. C16 inserted floor with slightly-chamfered joists; the bridging beam has evidence for short braces to the wall posts. The upper end has close studding and exposed joists on both floors. The wall posts continue above eaves level where they curve inwards in a cruck-like manner to support the attic floor above. The roof over this section has one row of wind-braced clasped purlins.
