Former farmhouse. Early-mid C16 main range, C17 service cross-wing to right,
extending to rear. Timber framed, mainly plastered, part at rear roughcast-
rendered. Plaintiled roof. 2 storeys, former attic in wing. Main range
originally jettied to front. Various casement windows, mostly old and without
glazing bars. Main range has 2 good doorways of c.1800. To left is a lobby
entrance: panelled pilasters, frieze and pedimented cornice; 6-panel door, the
lower 2 panels flush with reeded surrounds, the centre 2 fielded and the top 2
sunk. Doorway to right has fluted pilasters, a frieze and pedimented cornice,
both enriched with roundels, and a similar 6-panel door. 2 internal stacks,
one with a sawtooth shaft. Interior. Main range altered during C19, the
timbers mostly concealed. Hall ceiling has heavy chamfered cross beams, the
joists plastered over. Intact service partition with blocked 4-centre arched
doorways. Heavy studding and chamfered-mullioned window exposed in rear wall
of parlour, the mid rail O.5m. below the level of the ceiling; the timbers
show remains of red ochre decoration. On upper floor, an early C19 corridor
with flat arches and mid-late C19 fireplaces. Stick baluster stair in lower
bay of hall. Some C16 moulded doors. The cross-wing, in 5 irregular bays,
has plain studding and ceiling joists and a side purlin roof. Surrounding
medieval moat.
