Description

STOWUPLAND STOWMARKET ROAD TM 05 NE 7/194 Elm Farmhouse -- II Former farmhouse; mid C16, early C17 and early C19. Built in 2 sections. Front section of early C19: plastered brick (the lower section and the side walls are painted instead of plastered). Slated roof with gable chimneys of gault brick. 2 storeys, 3 windows. Small-pane sashes with flush frames, those at ground storey with boarded shutters. Entrance door with 2 tall beaded panels; square fanlight and flat canopy on brackets. The C19 building forms a double-pile plan with the earlier house behind; built in 2 stages, mid C16 and early C17. 3-cell plan, the service cell to left is an addition of C17. 2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof, hipped at right hand end. An axial C16/C17 chimney of red brick. Various C19 and C20 casements. The C16 section has good framing:- close-studding, chamfered floor joists, with pyramid chamfer stops to the binding beam in the hall. Clasped purlin roof. A large cambered lintel to the parlour fireplace to right. The C17 framing is complete but plain, and of slightly lesser quality. Listing NGR: TM0652459474
