2/136 Stanway Green Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Late C16 3-cell main range with slightly later service wing to
right, extending to the rear. Mid C20 wing to rear at left. Timber framed
and plastered. Roof plaintiled to front and pantiled to rear; the right end
is hipped. 2 storeys and attic. 4 windows, mainly C19 casements. Lobby
entrance with early C19 doorway: architrave with convex reeding and corner
roundels within squares; cornice; 6-panel raised and fielded door, the upper 2
panels glazed. Internal stack, the upper portion of the shaft rebuilt; small
stack to right at end of main range. In the hall and parlour there are roll-
moulded axial bridging beams and end cornices; the joists in both rooms are
concealed. The parlour fireplace has stone jambs, probably a later
reconstruction. The 3 first floor chambers all have cross-beamed ceilings.
Some good first floor studding with reverse-curved braces. An original gable
end window with ovolo mullions is visible in a small gap where the later work
adjoins. Parlour chamber fireplace is of c.1800, with eared surround and cast
iron grate. Roof over main range has clasped and butt purlins with 2-way wind
braces. Original newel stair to attic at parlour end. Service wing was
originally gabled to the front and set slightly back from the front wall of
the main range.
