Description

WETHERINGSETT-CUM-BROCKFORD WETHERUP STREET TM 16 SW 5/141 Sycamore Farmhouse -- II Farmhouse. C15 core, enlarged in mid C16. Timber framed, roughcast-rendered, pantiled roof. 2 storeys. 3 cells. 3 windows, late C19 2-light casements, each light with 4 panes. Lobby entry with C20 semi-glazed door. Internal stack, the shaft rebuilt 1980's. Later stack against left gable end. Interior. Core comprises former open hall with a heavily sooted coupled- rafter roof, not fully examined. At rear, a section of sooted wallplate and part of open truss with massive tie beam; remainder of medieval framing concealed. C16 hall ceiling, all components with a single roll moulding. C16 parlour end to left: main components of frame exposed on upper floor, with reverse-curved braces in end wall. Parlour has good ceiling with a single roll moulding to bridging beam and joists, and provision for an original ladder stair at the rear; this ceiling is earlier and of better quality than the inserted one in the hall. Between the present stack and the end of the moulded parlour ceiling is a 2m. wide section of ceiling with much poorer quality joists: this is likely to indicate the position of a previous chimney, probably against the end wall of the medieval hall.
