Description

TL 97 SE STANTON THE STREET (EAST SIDE) 3/48 Street Farmhouse II Former farmhouse. C16. 2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed, with C20 rendering in panels. C20 plaintiles. Basic 3-cell plan, with the south end remodelled in poorer timberwork in the C18. The north end has a complex gable in small red Tudor bricks, incorporating a chimney-stack: high moulded brick copings to the slopes of the roof; stepped sides and tumbled brickwork to the stack, which projects slightly. 4 attached hexagonal shafts stand on a large rectangular base, and the back of the stack has diaper patterns in blue headers and 5 small circular porthole-like openings. This stack has 3 hearths, including one in the attic. There is also an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The south end has a mid-C19 red brick gable in Victorian Romanesque style, reminiscent of the estate cottages at Troston built at the instigation of Robert Lofft of Troston Hall, who was lord of the manor at Stanton and owner of this farmhouse. Moulded copings with corbelling at the eaves and crowstepping decoration. 3 paired casement windows with heavy rounded rusticated surrounds. The room at the north end has a fireplace with moulded brick surround. The ceiling of the central room was removed during mid C20 restoration, to make a lofty hall with stair and gallery.
