Description
TM 07 NW THELNETHAM HIGH STREET
2/69 Barn immediately to north- west of Wards Farmhouse
GV II
Barn. Late C16, early C17 and C18. 8 bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded:corrugated asbestos roof on 2 levels, gabled on the south west, hipped on the north-east. The 6 bays to the north-east have good quality framing with a middle rail, and 2 wide cross-entries infilled with later brickwork and studding. The 3 end bays on the north-east have queen-post roof trusses which originally had 2 pairs of arched braces, an unusual feature. The evidence of partitions at each end of these 3 central bays, one with weatherboarding remaining, suggests that they formed the original building, extended soon after on the north-east, and in the C18 on the south-west. The 2 south-western bays have a lower roof-level, and incorporate a quantity of reused timbers. This is the oldest surviving barn in Thelnetham.
