Description
TL 87 NW WEST STOW NORTH STOW
3/64 Barn to rear of North Stow - Famhouse
- II
Aisled barn. Early C19. Timber-framed and weatherboarded, with clay pantiled roof. 7 bays, originally 8. A cart entry with later porch extension on the north side in the 3rd bay from the west and traces of another entry in the 2nd bay from the east. The framing is light-weight and almost entirely without reused timbers. Trusses with straight tie-beams, posts without jowls, bolted knees. Wide aisles, with double ties from the back of the arcade posts to the aisle roofs and a diagonal strut between. Longitudinally, the arcade posts are linked by middle rails, with straight primary bracing and bisected studs above, but no sign of infill: this was apparently to stiffen the frame, but may also have divided off the aisles for some separate use. The arcade posts appear to go directly into the ground, and probably rest on low brick or flint bases. The roof has a deep narrow ridge-piece, a lower row of butt purlins and an upper continuous purlin, trenched into the principals, and held in position by short diagonal struts from the collars: 14 bays, 2 bays corresponding to one bay of walls. This is one of the latest known examples of an aisled barn in Suffolk.
