Description
TL 96 SW ROUGHAM THE GREEN
5/44 Baldwins
- II
House, formerly Baldwins Farmhouse. C16 and later. 2 storeys; L-shaped plan, with a one-bay hall range and a 3-bay cross-wing. Timber-framed and rendered; single Roman tiles. An internal chimney-stack between the 2 ranges with 3 short hexagonal attached shafts. The exterior was modernised in the early C20, and now has a deceptively Edwardian appearance: roofs replaced at a shallow pitch; 2 canted bays, with brick bases and wide-paned sash windows, to the ground storey; older 2-light and 3-light casements to upper storey. A lean-to along part of the rear wall. The hall range has the main beams of the ceiling exposed, with a multiple roll-moulding and leaf-stops. The chimney- stack which divides the 2 ranges has 2 back-to-back hearths, infilled with later fireplaces, but with the remains of timber lintels. The frame of the cross-wing is exceptionally wide. It was always divided into 2 rooms with plain framing; arched braces at the corners; some blocked original windows. 3 arched doorheads have been fitted into the studding on the outer wall of the upper floor, but these are nailed, of a later date, and apparently purely decorative.
