HAVERHILL TL64NE BURTON END, Hazel Stub 816-1/2/34 (North side) 09/05/73 Nos.1 AND 2 Cowslip Pightle (No.2) (Formerly Listed as: BURTON END, Hazel Stub (North West side) No.1 Hazel Stub Cottages and Cowslip Pightle) II Formerly known as: Hazel Stub Farmhouse. Hall house, incorporated as service range into later house; now two dwellings. Original house C15, later house late C19; subdivision C20. Rendered brick, the rear timber-framed: plain tile roofs with 2 brick stacks on rear roof slope. EXTERIOR: original house of 4 bays, the 2-bay hall now divided between the later houses added at the front. 2-storey 3-bay gabled front. Central doorway under a gabled porch. Gabled half dormer above is fitted with a 3/3 horned sash. One 3/3 horned sash to each floor of left gable, one late C20 imitation sash to each floor of right gable. Rear: casements and sashes of late Georgian design. INTERIOR: close studded timber-frame survives intact to the wall plate. On first floor, timber-frame survives in rear wall only. Left bay (probably upper end of hall) at rear of Cowslip Pightle has stopped and chamfered spine beam and closely spaced, heavy floor joists; inserted stack of C16 or C17 date; half of hall to this address contains stair; jowled post prominently exposed on first floor landing. Lower end of hall contained within No.1 with beams and joists, and timbers repaired in places: rebuilt C17 fireplace. This item was first listed on 9th May 1973 as Hazel Stub Farmhouse but in the amendment of 19th November 1993 was mistakingly referred to as being added to the List whereas the List entry was amended to change the name to No.1 Hazel Stub Cottages and Dowslip Pightle.
