II
Three factories, warehouse and engine house; part now offices. Factories of 1856 and 1865; warehouse of 1856; engine house probably 1880. Factory of 1865 in minimal French Gothic style. Buildings of red brick under glazed or slate roofs. EXTERIOR: original factory is single-storey range with roof of serrated section and formerly lit through 14 sash windows. Warehouse of same date immediately east: 3-storey 8-window range of recessed sashes with glazing bars and hipped roof: 2-window range to east return. Extending north, a single-storey factory, now mostly offices: 6-window range. Factory of 1865 extending south from warehouse, of 3 storeys, rising to 4 at north end, 14-window range: ground floor with three stilted entrances under 4-centred arches. Ground- and first-floor fenestration of 2-light casements, second-floor windows alternating between 2-light casements and taller single-light casements under pointed arches in pointed gables. 2-storey engine house at north-east corner of new factory, with hipped roof. INTERIOR: not inspected, but steam engine remains. In 1880, a 120 hp. Single cylinder horizontal mill steam engine was installed. The first factory was constructed for the production of drabbet, the second for the manufacture of gloves. (Crouch P: Haverhill Town Trail: Haverhill: 1981-: 10-11).
