Description

TL 85 NW CHEVINGTON WHEPSTEAD 5/37 Ruffins Farmhouse (Formerly listed under General) 14.7.55 II Farmhouse, late C15 with C16 and C17 alterations. 3-cell Wealden type open hall house; 2 storeys; 4 windows. Timber-framed, rendered; 2 jettied ends each with 4 brackets supporting upper floor. Hipped plaintiled roof with axial chimneys of red brick. C20 2-light casements. Panelled entrance door at rear. 2-bay hall with open truss having square crownpost with 4 braces and moulded base and cap; cambered tie-beam with massive strutted unchamfered arch-braces; hewn pilasters with moulded capitals beneath braces. Chimney backing onto cross- passage, and first floor structure with ogee-mouldings inserted into hall c.1550. Chimney stack added to C15 parlour, and second parlour block and rear staircase wing added C17. Listing NGR: TL8080558565
