Listed Building: GIFFORD'S HALL (426732)

1. WICKHAMBROOK Gifford's Hall 2006 TL 7654 28/503 19.12.61. I 2. The Hall takes its name from the family of Gyfforde, of which Peter Gyfforde is known to have held the manor in circa 1272. The present house is a fine moated manor, one of the 3 in Wickhambrook. (the others being Gaines Hall and Clopton Hall). It is considered to have been built by Clement Higham who held the manor from 1480 until 1521 when he died. It was built circa 1490. After the Higham family the hall passed into the ownership of the Owers and Chinery families until the mid C19. It is a timber-framed building with exposed framing partly with plaster infil and partly with brick nogging. The Hall has gabled crosswings, one of which has a jettied attic storey on exposed joists. A wing was added circa 1901 in the style of the original and the building was extensively and very well restored. 2 storeys and attics. The windows are mullioned casements, some with transomes, with leaded lights. Roof tiled. The interior has 4 fine C16 panelled rooms and one of the C17-C18 period. There is an exceptionally fine hall with solar over both having richly moulded beam and joist ceilings. The staircase is early C18 with turned balusters. Listing NGR: TL7708353842
