Description

TL 86 SE ROUGHAM ELDERSTUB LANE 4/40 Granary and Maltings to the south-east of Maltings Farmhouse GV II A granary and maltings. Circa 1800; L-shaped plan. 2 storeys; 9 bays to one range, 3 bays to the other, with a mid C19 maltings added at the north-east end. A single-storey lean-to, contemporary with the main structure, runs along the inner side of both ranges. Timber-framed, with red brick infilling to the upper storey over a low ground-storey of flint and red brick. The upper walls are now faced in corrugated iron. Black-glazed pantiled roofs. Slatted windows with internal hook-up shutters. The maltings is entirely of brick and flint. The interior of the granary has good timbering, and an unusual combination of features. The low ground-storey has exposed timber ceilings with substantial joists set on edge; the inner side walls are open to the lean-to, and divided only by the main posts. All components are morticed and pegged, and many have assembly marks. Roof with no principal rafters, 2 rows of stepped butt purlins and a ridge-piece. Main posts with shaped heads, and king-post trusses with 2 queen-struts springing from the thickened-out base of the king-post. In the angle of the 2 ranges, remains of a former conical roof, and dragon-ties strengthening the 4 corners of the frame, indicate that this was the position of the original malting kiln.
