Description
TL 85 NW BROCKLEY BURY ROAD
4/35 Suttons Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse, late C16. 2 storeys, 3-cell plan with additional cell behind parlour. Timber-framed and rendered. Plain-tiled roof with axial and gable chimneys of red brick. Late C18 3-light casements. C20 boarded entrance door. An original staircase of triangular blocks pegged to bearers, within what would otherwise be a cross-passage. Exposed timber-framing with ovolo-moulded 1st floor beams. An original smoke-curing chamber at attic level, associated with the axial chimney; so far a unique example in Suffolk. For details, see "A smoke-curing chamber at Brockley" by John McCann, Proceedings of Suff. Inst. Arch., 1982. In the will of John Sutton, 1696, the farm was vested in trustees, and income to be used for maintaining 6 poor religious men and 6 poor boys in Bury St. Edmunds.
