Description

Monitoring was carried out ahead of residential development after a pre-determination evaluation in 1998. The development involved the construction of nine homes and a foyer, with a short access road and car parking. Following the clearance of the site the footings for the Foyer and Buildings 9 and 10 were excavated and were all located on the site of the former bank. Much of the fill comprised loose gravel and the sides of the trenches were unstable. The footings of Building 7 were also prone to collapse due to a large robbing pit. Monitoring of the trenches was selective based on the results of the earlier work and scale of the disturbance. It was difficult to monitor the excavation of short drain runs and many did not reach the natural subsoil. The access road did not impinge significantly on archaeological levels and was therefore not monitored. Monitoring visits were carried out during the excavation of the majority of soakaways (S1).
