Description
Archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of the proposed re-development of the Coach House by the National Trust to create a visitor centre with associatede carparks for the nearby Sutton Hoo cemetery site. The evaluation was carried out at the pre-determination stage. The area to be evaluated covered c.2.25ha. Trenches 1-5 were positioned to intercept the anomalies identified by the geophysical survey, while the remaining trenches were located to sample the remaining area of the site. All the trenches contained a dark brown sandy loam topsoil 0.1m-0.3m deep. In areas which had previously been ploughed had a thin subsoil 0.05m-0.2m thick which overlay the natural sands and gravels (S1).
