Description
The area of two buildings A4 and A2 were excavated. For building A4 initially there was a brief building recording of the cellar of the 18th century farmhouse. The fabric of the cellar suggested that they may be part of an earlier building. A test trench north of the cellar confirmed that the medieval range survived below the farmhouse. A 15m x 15m area was stripped under archaeological supervision. The machining exposed the stubs of a series of brick walls running both N-s and E-W that divided up the excavation area. The walls were from structures that could be identified on the 1st edition OS map. Most could be assigned to a sequence of 6 phases and dated from the 14th/15th centuries. On site A2 the existing barn was demolished in advance of the excavation leaving in place the base of the wall. A 20m x 17m, the footprint of the proposed building, was opened up. This confimed the findings of several phases of activit on site since the Iron Age.
