Description

Nineteen evaluation trenches totalling 812m length were excavated in advance of housing development, identifying an area of prehistoric activity in the centre of the site (trenches 7, 9 and 17). An excavation of 1570sq m was undertaken revealing a buried soil horizon which may be the remnants of an Early Bronze Age burial mound. The site appears to be a small Bronze Age/Iron Age funerary site, containing one EBA inhumation and at least nine cremations, amidst a scatter of undated pits. One cremation was contained in an Early Bronze Age collared urn, two were radiocarbon dated to the Late Bronze Age, and the remainder were mid-late Iron Age. A large medieval pit was also found.
