Description

Eleven evaluation trenches, totalling 235m in length, were excavated prior to residential redevelopment, revealing a range of features concentrated in the northern part of the site. The features ranged in date from Saxo-Norman to post medieval in date, and comprised ditches, gullies, pits and postholes. With the exception of one medieval cesspit, finds were generally sparse, suggesting the area was on the periphery of a medieval settlement. The centre of the site was found to be heavily truncated, while the south was generally devoid of archaeological remains. A palaeoenvironmental assessment found that peat deposits adjacent to the mill channel were relatively shallow, and no waterlogged deposits were encountered.
