Site Event/Activity record ESF20151 - Monitoring - Orangery at Cockerells Hall, Buxhall

Monitoring of foundations for an Orangery, revealed brick foundations for an 19th century outbuilding and a probable garden soil. Foundation trenches only had to be excavated on the southern and western sides of the structure and this was done by hand following breaking of the concrete base to the existing patio. Two visits were made to inspect the foundation trench and the upcast spoil was also examined. The 0.5m wide foundation trenches were taken to 0.8m deep revealing a gneral sequence of modern upper layers above what appeared to be a uniform garden type clay soil. To the west of the wall foundations the deposits observed were: 0.2m concrete patio over 0.05m black asphalt surface over 0.05m sand base to asphalt. This lay over 0.25m of mid dark grey clay loam with small brick/tile fragments which overlay 0.25m natural yellow/orange clay (S1).
