Description

A single trench evaluation at Bungay Primary School in advance of the construction of a new extension towards the north-west of the existing school buildings, carreid out in July 2010. No archaeologically relevant deposits or artefacts were recovered. The trench was 9.2m long, 1.6m wide and up to 1.26m deep, orientated NE-SW. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of 0.61m of pale greyish brown silty sand topsoil with frequent small ceramic building material (CBM) fragments, coal/charcoal flecking and a small amount of modern and post-medieval pottery fragments. This sealed up to 0.65m of dark greyish brown silty sand with occasional small charcoal flecks, CBM fragments and further post-medieval/modern pottery fragments including blue and white pattern china and modern glazed pottery. Below this was a mid/dark orangey brown banded silty sand, interpreted as natural geology (S1).
