Description
An archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of construction of a new store at the Nuffields Hospital. The initial removal of modern deposits, being some 0.2m deep, exposed a buried soil horizon. This was a homogenous brown loam, containing patches of burnt clay and two sherds of medieval pottery and oystershell. This layer sealed the underlying archaeological deposits and was totally removed, being up to 0.3m thick. This exposed the top of a range of features cut into the subsoil (S1).
