Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a construction of 14 dwellings at Shrubbery Farm, Hubbards Lane, Hessett. The proposed development lay at TL 9368 6116 at a height of c. 67m OD. The site is towards the southern edge of the modern village in an area where the precise course of the green edge is uncertain. Interest in the site is centred on the potential to resolve this issue and to identify evidence for the medieval settlement. The evaluation identified a ditch suggested to be the eastern edge to the green and a range of shallow features that are thought to be medieval and possibly earlier. A significant collection of finds recovered from beneath the topsoil are dated to the Late Saxon and medieval periods.
