Description

A fieldwalking survey of 13.9ha centered upon the Travellers Hill tumulus, King's Forest, Wordwell and two adjacent barrows was carried out after the felling of a forestry plantation and clearance of tree stumps. The survey collected a widespread scatter of prehistoric material, predominantly struck flint of late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date, indicating flint working on the site broadly contemporary with the assumed date of the barrows. Despite limitations to the survey, which meant that the immediate locations of the three barrows could not be examined, a distinct cluster of struck and burnt flint was identified in the possible location of a fourth barrow, which has been recorded from study of historic mapping. Limited material of post-medieval date, likely deriving from the sites later use as arable farmland, was also collected.
