Description
Monitoring of trench excavations for ground beams during the construction of a garage in the garden at 3, Chequer Square. The construction plan called for the sinking of mini-piles with connecting ground beams. The piling was carried out and the excavation of the connecting trenches was monitored. As arhcaeological deposits were exposed in the base of the trenche this was cleaned over selected areas, as were lengths of section. The monitoring revealed the remains of clay floors, flint, and flint and mortar walls from a medieval building beneath layers of pegtile, fronting onto Bridewell Lane. Over most of the development the archaeological levels lay undisturbed and are preserved beneath the standing building (S1).
