Description
Groundwork undertaken for the construction of an annex to the rear of 1, Castle Terrace, Orford, was archaeologically monitored. The new structure was to be built on strip foundations which were inspected after their excavation. The trenches revealed a yellow sand, interpreted as a natural subsoil, at a depth of c. 0.8m beneath an overburden of dark sandy loam (plate 1). No archaeological features or deposits were noted. Spoil was removed from the site in skips. Two of these were examined but no significant artefacts were recovered. It was noted that the area of the new build comprised a terrace at a level c.1m higher than the adjacent roadway.
