Description

Archaeological evaluation undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of an affordable housing development of 20 dwellings. Nine trenches each between 10-50m x 1.6m were excavated. Archaeological features were recorded in every trench except Trench 9 in the southern corner of the site. The earliest feature is an urned cremation recorded within the subsoil. Sparse struck flint consistent with a later Neolithic to early Bronze Age date was also found. The majority of the dated features were Roman, late 1st - 2nd century. The Roman features were principally ditches and gullies. A pit was also recorded. Undated features other than ditches and gullies included pits and postholes. A large assemblage of pottery was found.
