Description

Features recorded at the site represent Neolithic activity forming part of a wider landscape which also incorporates the Fornham All Saints cursus and causewayed enclosures. Bronze Age features may also be seen as part of a wider Bronze Age landscape and the possible barrows of this phase would appear to form part of a dispersed string of such features forming a band to the north of Bury St Edmunds. Iron Age activity recorded at the site appears to represent storage pits, many of which are organised into distinct groups. Some evidence for symbolic activity was found in association with these features and it is possible that the presence of the wetland area may have made this a propitious area. The layout of features during the prehistoric period may suggest that the wetland area associated with Timworth Carr had some influence over their distribution.
