Description

An archaeological excavation was carried out at Moulton Paddocks, Newmarket between the 2nd and 6th of December 2013. The development entailed the construction of a practice start track with stalls and turning circle, with an access track from the road to the south. The proposed track will be 250m long x 5m wide and the access road 40m long x 4m wide; there will be a turning ring 20m in diameter at the northern end of the practice track. The works revealed a series of tree throws with no associated finds along with a small area of colluvial soil which contained prehistoric struck flint. The colluvium was found within a large natural hollow at a low point in the central area of the field, and was overlain by recent made ground.
