Description

In May 2014 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out a programme of continuous archaeological monitoring and recording, and strip, map and sample at The Thai Kitchen. It was proposed to carry out extensions and alterations to the structure. The principal groundworks were to comprise excavation to create a new basement stairwell to improve access to the original cellar which suffers from low headroom at the entrance doorway. The site lies within the historic medieval and post-medieval core of the town of Bungay. This is defined on the Waveney Local Plan and the Suffolk Historic Environment Record (HER BUN 028). The site fronts St Mary's Street and the building is listed, thought to date from c1500 AD and forms part of a larger building described as a guildhall. In the event only modern demolition debris was recorded, and no archaeological or features were present (S1).
