Description
An archaeological monitoring was carried out during the excavation of post pad footings, prior to the construction of an extension to the rear of Coniston, Field Stile Road, Southwold, Suffolk. The development lies within the area of medieval Southwold defined in the County Historic Environment Records.
The ground works consisted of three square footings, excavated by hand for post pads, against the east wall of the existing extension. The footings were examined during a single site visit by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, Field Projects Team.
A layer of topsoil overburden 0.9m deep was in the upper section of all footings, (0001) was a dark brown silty sand containing occasional small fragments of CBM and mortar, sub-angular flint pebbles and charcoal flecks. Below this was natural, clean, mottled yellow and mid brown sand (0002), extending to the base of all excavations.
0001 is a very deep A horizon to be found in association with a residence of Coniston’s date (c.1930’s). It probably represents sustained agricultural activity on this site prior to the construction of the property, perhaps associated with Town Farm, the farm house for which lay directly to the east of Coniston, in the area of the current hospital building.
