Description
A watching brief was carried out on extensions to 17, Church St, Exning. All footing trenches were examined after excavation and some of the upcast spoil was available for visual inspection. No archaeology was revealed. The initial site strip had cut into a terraced garden, so a section c. 1m deep, through topsoil, was exposed on the west side. Two modern disturbances were visible in the north and south footing trenches but the topsoil in the remainder of the trenches was an homogeneous grey-brown, well mixed, chalky-clayey loam generally c. 0.35m deep but as shallow as 0.2m deep in places. This was very clean with no finds or occupation debris. The chalk subsoil was pretty level despite the terracing at the west end, which may suggests that the natural slope within the garden starts further west than the edge of the terrace.
