Description
A visit was made on the 5th of May 2000, at a time when the contractors suggested that the excavated pads would be available for inspection. However, due to problems with the bucket of the mechanical excavator, only one had been opened. No features were visible in the sides of this 0.8m square hole.
Also during this visit the opportunity was taken to inspect the rest of the swimming pool area. Here topsoil had been removed to reveal, in the northern half, the surface of the underlying chalk. A number of post-hole-like features were visible, all containing unsonsolidated loam with flecks of tile or brick. These were all thought to be post-medieval in origin, possibly associated with the standing building. No other features were visible. Inspection of the spoil heap failed to recover any finds other than post-medieval building materials.
