Description
A visit was made to Ipswich Town Hall to monitor an Engineers Test-hole excavated on the site of a proposed lift shaft. A c.1.2m square hole had been excavated to a depth of c.0.9m from the existing basement floor level, with a further c.0.4m square hole excavated in the corner of the main pit to a depth of 1.34m below existing floor level. The upcast spoil, with the exception of a small quantity of rubble, had been removed and was not available for examination.
The footing of the standing building had been expoed in the trench which appeared to have been entirely through fill. The 'made-ground', which comprised mixed loam, sand and rubble, seemed not to be archaeological in character although the sides of the pit were dirty. No artefactual evidence was recovered from scraping down the sides of the trench which, on balance, appears to confirm the made ground interpretation.
