Description
All footing trenches were open at the time of the inspection of a small extension on the rear of the building.
The subsoil was undulating chalk overlain by yellow sand. The trench was 1.2m deep of which the top 60cm cut through topsoil with chalk flecks and modern rubbish. The rest was sand subsoil with some chalk near the base. Two possible changes in the subsoil near the base looked to be the result of solution holes in the underlying chalk. There was a siungle pit seen in the western footing trench; this was c1.5m wide x1.2m deep and filled with dark loam containing modern brick, tile and rubble. No archaeological finds were recovered.
