Description
The site was visited on the 10th April 2002 with the aim of demonstrating the presence or absence of medieval settlement in this area of Kettleburgh. All the footings for the construction of four houses, arranged as two blocks of two semi-detached houses, were open for inspection. See fig. 1 for a location plan of the site and of the inspected footings. The footings were excavated to varying depths ranging from c.1.4m for the majority of them, to c.2.8m on the east side of the plot (due to the proximity of trees and a hedge). The make up of the ground, as revealed in the footing trenches, comprised a layer of topsoil c.0.20m thick overlying a natural subsoil consisting of grey boulder clay. No features were identified. The spoil from the footings, the majority of which was on-site, was visually examined but no artefacts of any period were found.
The footing trenches were cut cleanly and had any features been present it is highly likely they would have been recognised. The lack of archaeological evidence recovered from these footings possibly adds further weight to the theory that earlier settlement in Kettleburgh runs south from the church.
