Description
Area of hockey pitch stripped of 200mm of top soil so surface examined still in base of top soil/sub-soil, also dry, dusty, conditions (strip by 360 with ditching bucket). No features seen and only finds few Pmed tile frags.
Drainage trench, c400mm deep, seen along eastern and western edges and across central part of pitch seen, into 'loes' type material common to shotley peninsula and no finds or features observed.
Due to relatively superficial nature of soil strip for all weather pitch cannot be conclusive about lack of archaeology but absence of any finds of note on surface and in pipe trenches indicates, at most, only potential on site for scattered features with no evidence of any level of intense past activity.
