Description

The trench sections and base were examined after excavation. The trenches were only 35cm deep and had removed topsoil only. Exactly at the base of the trench (ie. 35cm) this came down onto a mid brown loam containing chalk and brick fragments, these were identified as 19th/early 20th century. The layer was cut on the east side by a more recent pit containing slate and a low level of other modern building debris and on the west by a metal drain from the gutters of the existing house. The interface between the clean brown topsoil and the underlying layer was very sharp and may have been imported. Whilst nothing of archaeological significance was observed it is worth noting that the presence of the underlying soil layer means that there is good potential for the survival of earlier archaeological remains beneath this.
