Description

A watching brief as carried out on this small office development while the footing trenches were being excavated. The ground was very disturbed and there was no evidence of occupation before the post-medieval period. Most of the footing trenches were available for inspection with the exception of the eastern wall trench which had not yet been excavated. The sections revealed a sandy loam soil which was between 0.6m and 0.8m deep and overlaid a flinty ravel, and in places sand. The soil was heavily disturbed with service trenches and footings from the prvious building on the site. There was also a fairly clear distinction between this soil, and the natural gravel and sand beneath, this suggests the ground had been truncated and any well formed subsoil layer removed or eroded away (S1).
