Description
In February 2006, Archaeological Solutions Ltd (As) carried out an archaeological watching brief at the site of the village centre, which is part of Phase 4A at Cedars Park, Stowmarket, Suffolk (NGR TM 0615 5875) prior to development by Crest Nicholson. Extensive archaeological investigations have been undertaken prior to earlier phases of the Cedar's Park development. This area covered a strip on the southern edge of Phase 4A. Previous excavations of Phase 4 included two areas of excavation in the north and north-eastern parts of the development area. Features from these excavations included a Late Iron Age and early Romano-British enclosure and roundhouses, and a later Romano-British farmstead in the northern part of Phase 4A. The north-eastern excavation principally revealed archaeological features dating between the 10th to 14th centuries with remodelling occurring within the 12th to 14th centuries. The watching brief recorded a NNW/SSE aligned linear drainage ditch of a post-medieval date, which terminated with a ditch at the edge of the Creeting Road. The larger drainage ditch was parallel to the existing route way.
