Description

Evaluation, which included targeted metal detecting was undertaked to accompany a planning application for residential development. Twenty two trenches were excavated. Previous geophysical survey did not identify any anomalies of archaeological potential. The evaluation recorded features across the site. The general stratigraphy encountered across the site predominantly comprised sands and clays, overlain by subsoil 0.1m-0.4m thick, overlain by topsoil 0.4m thick. However in trenches 1,2,4 and 5 in the Northern area and trench 22 in the southern area the natural substrate was directly overlain by topsoil . Trenches 1,5,9-13,16,18 and 21 did not contain archaeological features or deposits. Modern field drains were identified in the trenches 1-3,6 and 7. Metal detected artefacts were recovered from the ropsoil of trenches 16 and 19 prior to their excavation and from the post-excavation spoil heaps of trenches 14,15,16,17 and 20 (S1).
