Description

Monitoring of groundworks associated with floor lowering, services and underpinning work. The floor level had already been reduced by 0.9m at the time of the visit. One undated feature was identified and medieval pottery was recovered from a discrete area of the spoil heap of the lowered barn floor. Three fragments of worked medieval masonry had been used as rubble in the foundations of the building. Unfortunately the already completed groundworks would have destroyed any features once present inside the barn. An area north of the barn had been stripped of 0.5m of topsoil and footings were also excavated in this area. No features were observed. A trench was excavated along the eastern edge of the track to the barn for a telephone cable, 0.3m wide x 0.4m deep. No features or findss were present. The service trench on the eastern side of the barn revealed only modern drains.
