Description
Watching brief of four trial pits and two drilling pits at locations between Great Wenham Sewage Treatment Works and the village of Capel St Mary to locate the pipeline and prepare for the drilling of a replacement sewage pipe. Trial Pit A was 2.3m wide, 42m long and 0.6m deep. Trial Pit B was 1.7m wide and 2.3m long and 1m depth. Drilling pit C was an irregularly-shaped pit 9.0m by 4.5m dug to the depth of the existing pipeline (1.1m). Drilling pit D was 2.0m wide and 3.0m long and also dug to the depth of the existing pipeline (1.4m). Trial Pit E was 1.5m long and 0.6m wide and was dug to locate the existing sewage pipe and confirm its direction. The pipe was at a depth of 0.65m. Trial Pit F was 1.9m long and 0.7m wide and was dug to locate the existing sewage pipe and confirm its direction. The pipe was at a depth of 0.75m. No archaeological features or finds were revealed in any of the pits.
